Early Life and Career

Mila grew up in a family of industrialists and engineers, and he was encouraged to pursue a career in the same field. However, he decided to study interior design at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona. After completing his studies, he worked for several years with the renowned architect Francesc Mitjans.

In the early 1950s, Mila started to work independently, focusing on lighting and furniture design. He quickly gained a reputation for his fresh and innovative designs, which embodied the spirit of the time. His works featured a modern and minimalist aesthetic, characterized by clean lines, simple shapes, and the use of natural materials.

Collaboration with Santa & Cole

In the 1960s, Mila started his collaboration with Santa & Cole, a design company founded by a group of architects and designers in Barcelona. This collaboration lasted for more than five decades and resulted in many iconic designs.

One of the most famous works of Mila for Santa & Cole is the TMM lamp, which was designed in 1961. This lamp has become a design classic and has won several awards, including the ADI-FAD Delta Gold Award.

Legacy and Influence

Miguel Mila’s contribution to the field of design goes far beyond his numerous works. He was a pioneer in the use of natural materials, such as wood and leather, in industrial design. He was also a prominent advocate for the use of sustainable and eco-friendly materials.
